Nadia Erostarbe Takes the Lead in Women's Surfing at the 2024 Olympics

The excitement of the 2024 Paris Olympics continues to build as surfing makes its debut in the Olympic arena. The Women's Round 1 - Heat 7, held at the iconic Teahupo'o in Tahiti, showcased some of the best talents in the sport, with athletes vying for glory on the waves.

Leading the heat was Spain's Nadia Erostarbe, who delivered a remarkable performance, achieving a top score of 13.83. Erostarbe, making her Olympic debut, began surfing at just three years old and has already made her mark in the sport with a best of fourth place at the World Surfing Games earlier this year. In this heat, she demonstrated exceptional skill, with her wave scores reflecting her prowess: 8.33, 3.83, 3.57, 5.50, and 1.63.

Following closely behind was New Zealand's Saffi Vette, who secured the second position with a total score of 7.50. Vette, also making her Olympic debut, has a diverse background, having started on a boogie board at the age of two. Her determination and hard work have paid off, as she clinched gold at the national championships in 2021.

Third place was claimed by China's Siqi Yang, a trailblazer as the first Chinese surfer to qualify for the Olympics. Yang scored a total of 5.40, showcasing her talent and dedication to the sport. Despite the challenges, she has established herself in the competitive surfing scene, with her international debut at the 2020 Open China.

The event was judged by an esteemed panel, including officials from the USA, Brazil, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and Spain, ensuring a fair and rigorous assessment of the competitors' performances. The head judges were Richard Pierce Jr. from the USA and Luiz Steffen Pereira from Brazil, both bringing a wealth of experience to the judging panel.
